Learn about the variety of contact lenses we use
Contact lenses are the number one choice for many people with vision correction needs. For many, contact lenses provide flexibility and convenience. There are many different lenses available for a variety of needs and preferences. Contact lenses can be used to correct a variety of vision disorders such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, presbyopia (poor focusing with reading material and other near vision tasks), as well are a wide range of different ocular conditions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates all contact lenses as prescription medical devices.
Soft Contact lenses
Soft contact lenses are made of soft, flexible plastics that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea. They can correct myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. They can also be used for myopia management.
At Vision NYC, our doctors utilize a variety of specialty contacts to enhance your vision when traditional soft contacts may no longer provide clarity. These lenses are used to provide clarity and comfort in a variety of patients suffering from Dry Eye Syndrome, Graft vs. Host disease, Sjogren’s Syndrome, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, Microphthalmia, Keratoconus, Corneal Ectasia, Aniridia, and Neurotrophic Keratopathy / Keratitis (anesthetic corneas). These lenses are customized to each patient’s eye.
Scleral Contact Lenses
Scleral contact lenses are large diameter, rigid contact lenses that can also provide a more regular front surface of the eye. They sit on the sclera, the white part of the eye. Scleral lenses offer clarity and comfort for patients who have been previously told they were not good candidates for contacts or who have been unsuccessful with other types of contact lenses. These lenses can provide improved comfort and vision when traditional RGPs have failed
Hybrid Contact Lenses
Hybrid contact lenses have a soft contact attached to the outside of a central RGP. They tend to be more comfortable for patients as compared to RPGs but in more advanced cases of corneal diseases, they might not be a viable option
Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Contact Lenses
As their name suggests, RGPs are made of a hard material that can provide a new and regular front surface of the eye. They sit on the cornea, the clear front part of the eye.
Ortho-keratology (Ortho-K) Contact Lenses
Ortho-K or Corneal reshaping contact lenses are a type of RGPs. They are worn during sleep and removed in the morning. They temporarily change the shape of the cornea, so that the wearer can see clearly all day long without glasses or contact lenses. They can be used to treat myopia (in lieu of correction during daytime) or slow the progression of myopia.
